AI and the Climate-Smart Farm

Innovation

When unpredictable weather threatens harvests, small farms are at risk of losing crops and profits. That’s exactly the kind of problem Digital Green's FarmerChat app was designed to handle. The AI-powered app delivers personalized, climate-friendly agricultural advice in farmers’ own languages and on platforms they already use.

In India, Saraswati Vishwakarma turned to FarmerChat for advice when an unseasonal cold threatened her potato crop, and again when pests moved in on her lemons. In addition to Saraswati, the tool has helped over a million other farmers around the world access data and guidance that improve yields, build climate resilience, and boost their incomes.

FarmerChat is a prime example of how new tech can deliver quick, effective impact in a fast-moving world. By conveying knowledge from traditional and Indigenous agricultural practices to farmers worldwide, the app can help them adapt and integrate sustainable farming techniques to withstand modern threats — bridging the gap between traditional practices and climate-resilient farming. That’s why The Rockefeller Foundation is helping to develop and scale the platform across continents — and enable expert guidance to reach farmers like Saraswati.

By improving access to timely information, FarmerChat is helping farmers respond faster to risks in the field.
